Our History in Brief

Since its establishment in 1966, Kyorin University School of Medicine and affiliated hospital has served as the major medical educational institution and tertiary healthcare provider for the western area of metropolitan Tokyo. Most recently in 2024, the Kyorin University established a second affiliated hospital located in the Suginami Ward of Tokyo.

Founder of Kyorin University

Shinyu Matsuda believed that education is critical to the strength and prosperity of a nation and its people. It was this conviction that inspired him to establish Kyorin University in 1966, with "Pursuit of Truth, Goodness, and Beauty" as the school's founding spirit.

Faculty of Medicine established/ Kyorin University Hospital opened by founder Dr. Shinyu Matsuda

1971

Affiliated High School of Nursing established (Predecessor of the Faculty of Medicine-affiliated Nursing School, which closed in 2020)

1976

Graduate School of Medicine established

1979

Faculty of Health Sciences established/ Trauma and Critical Care Center (TCC) established

1984

Faculty of General Policy Studies (currently the Faculty of Social Sciences) established/Graduate School of Health Sciences established

1988

Faculty of Foreign Studies established

1993

Graduate School of International Cooperation Studies established

1994

Kyorin University Hospital designated as a special functioning hospital/ TCC designated as advanced emergency medical service center

2016

Kyorin University celebrates its 50th anniversary/ Inokashira Campus opened

Kyorin University-Affiliated Suginami Hospital opened
